Simulation Modes
From SysCAD Documentation
Navigation: Model Libraries
SysCAD comes in two principle simulation modes, ProBal (process balance) and Dynamic. There are two options for dynamic simulation, generally referred to as Dynamic Transfer and Dynamic Full (hydraulic) modes. There is also the option for using SysCAD for Mass Balance simulation only or for a full Mass & Energy balance. This applies to steady state or dynamic simulation modes.
The SysCAD License determines which are available to the user. All modes share the same flowsheet.
The Simulation Solve and Heat modes can be set from the Configure dialog box. If the Process Balance mode is selected, then the user can access the ProBal Setup dialog box to set the solve options. If one of the Dynamic modes is selected, then the user can access the Dynamic Setup set the run options.
ProBal Simulation Mode
Process Balance -- In ProBal mode, SysCAD is used to simulate a plant model under steady state condition in order to produce a plant material and energy balance. There are a number of application for steady state modelling including data evaluation; feasibility studies to test various operation conditions and assess flowsheet options.
The available models in SysCAD are outlined in Model Libraries.
The user can specify the accuracy of solution for the mass and energy balance. The ProBal Setup dialog box presents these options.
Dynamic Transfer Simulation Mode
Dynamic Transfer is the basic dynamic license option for flow based dynamic simulation. It is well suited for material handling processes. All pipes are modelled as transfer links, where fixed flow rates or flowrate rate capacities are specified directly. It is well suited for surge & availability studies and production planning. Accelerated time with large step size to analyse long term forecasts, focus on macro effects and major equipment.
In Dynamic Transfer mode, SysCAD can be used for design verification, plant equipment sizing, assist in process control strategy development, used for control system/PLC testing and operator training.
Dynamic Full (Hydraulic) Simulation Mode
Dynamic Full (hydraulic) is the advanced dynamic license option for pressure based dynamic simulations. Flow rates in the streams are a function of the pressure network in the flowsheet. In this mode a more detailed configuration of the piping and process units are required. This mode is suitable for detailed analysis of processes, and can be used for models including vapour processes.
The Advanced hydraulic mode is an extension of the basic transfer mode and thus includes all of the functionality fro the dynamic transfer simulation mode.
Typically, the SysCAD dynamic software is used by Kenwalt to develop solutions for clients. These solutions are then provided to the client together with the software and licence(s). The client can modify the project, run scenario cases and so on, depending on the project objectives.
In dynamic mode, SysCAD determines how the plant will perform over time taking into consideration the time variation in, for example, feed size distribution, feed composition, and the action of the control system. This mode models the behaviour of the unit operations and the connectivity via pipes, valves, pumps, conveyors and other material and energy transferring devices.
The dynamic configuration options are presented in the Dynamic Setup dialog box, which will become available when the Dynamic mode is selected in the Configure dialog box. NOTE: This will also be limited by the SysCAD licence options. The speed of simulation depends on the size and complexity of the process modelled, and the computer hardware used. The simulation speed can be obtained in the Dynamic Info page.
